Semi Final Round -- Thoughts on the Final Three

I followed the super singer but was not writing actively about it. One of the main reasons was because it was too long. It had one wild card round where lots of rejected participants came back into the program (some choices were good for the program) and that pushed the program ahead. Then they are now talking about another wild card round! The program has almost stretched out to an year. I was more looking forward for the "super singer juniors - part 2" to start earlier this year. Looks like that has been pushed out as the regular Super Singer got popular and longer!

Anyway, now that we are the semi finals, I am starting to write down my thoughts. The final three singers are Ravi, Renu and Ajesh. Good singers all of them. But I am wondering what Yuvan Shankar Raja is going to do with them? None of these singers seems to fit into the mold that Yuvan operates in.

Ravi has perfection but his voice seems too thin/sharp and seems to lack a base. He also seems too rigid and into classical a way too much. You can't find mistakes in his singing but at the same time it is not extraordinary to enjoy.

Renu has a great voice, but has not shown any inclination to experiment or come out of her comfort zone. She gives the feeling that it will be very difficult to extract anything out of her.

Ajesh is not versatile at all. He has a long way to go. He has a good grasp of singing basics, but does not exude confidence.

These three choices are not the best of the lot. Yuvan could have done a lot with voices of Vijay, RaginiSri and Prasanna. It was hard to see Ranjani go out the door. Ranjani's powerful voice can be molded easily for great songs that will stay in people's mind. Yuvan could have benefited from these four singers rather than Ravi, Renu and Ajesh.

  1. Ajesh, Ravi, Renu, Ranjani, Vijay are Beautiful singers. Each personality having good voice doing good experimental. All should be a Professional singers, having a bright future. Thanks for Star Vijay TV for conducting these types of programs. Really thankful we are enjoying a lot with family.

  2. Happy New Year. Had to say that i strongly agree with your comments on the top 3. and this is despite enjoying ajeesh's voice immensely. what is yuvan going to do with those three?

Vijay is very very talented but his voice really does not cooperate sometimes. but its unique and i think it would suit yuvan's style best.

i like ranjani also. sometimes however, its a case of.. what happened to ranjani.

prasanna was such a good entertainer but there was a little too much of it and there wasnt anything unique to him. so i could accept his going out of the competition. He will probably get concert offers and will probably do very well.

ragini sri. very unique voice. She could have really tried harder. i think vijay and ragini sri's voice would have done well in some of the modern compositions but she really didnt seem to venture into filmy filmy songs.

correct me if i am wrong but i think she was rather daunted by the whole process, especially the online comments etc.. and the fact that her voice was low.

i strongly suggest that someone on vijay tv has a mock recording round. where they each sing a song under yuvan's composition. and i mean an entirely new song. or a couple. and we see how they respond when reacting in an almost real playback scenario. after all that is the professions they are seeking.

more that singing someone else's song. how do they sound in their own song. how good can they make their own song sound. if you love a certain song..the minute you hear it, you are bound to atleast have some expectation. either to the detriments and benefit of the singer.

as for this week's video's .. i dont want a recap. its boring. what to do. some people might

  3. Hi all happy thimiz putthandu vazthukkal. You all know there is going to another wild card round where Prasanna, deepshika, santhosh and raginisri are recalled. My opinion is that deepshika who is already a popular singer in 'podhigai thullatha manamum thullum' has a better chance and possesses a an excellent voice. Similarly prasanna will pose a tough challenge for the rest of male singers.

  4. Sreenivas, the selection was announced but Deepshika was not included. I think singer Shreeni was debating between Deepshika and Santosh. He chose Santosh finally.

I loved Deepshika's singing. I thought she was solid in the beginning. I was surprised she lost steam. She could sing effortlessly and that made it look like she was not very involved in the song. She seemed very detached all the time. If she applies herself a little more and concentrates then she would be a great singer. In the performance round I remember she went to extremes to dance (at the expense of singing and her breath) and got bad comments in that round. It was unfortunate, as she was the best performer that day!

  5. akshi,

That is a great suggestion: sing a new song and see how they fair. That would be a good test in the final round. But it would depend on Yuvan's tune also :) What if we do not like his tune for one the singers?

  7. Dear Pann and Akshi,
I am not sure if you both are experts in music but not bad after all for the comments on the final 3. But in reality this is the fact. Firstly, this is a tv show which is totally planned to an extent of making maximum profit. 2nd what you guys watch on the tv is not exactly how everyone sound when they sing and the editing process hides a lot of stuffs. This is not my personal opinion but as I am involved in this process I am able to tell you all this. From the final 3, only Ajesh and Ravi deserves according to the average marks from the first round itself. Renu is there as it is Tamil ulagathin agha bramandha kural thedal. No one can deny she as a very beautiful voice but unfortunately she is monotonous and there is no career expansion for her. She is the melody singer but you must consider of her knowledge in music which is just started and not like Ravi or Ajesh who have years of learning. Next, you said Vijay, Prasana and Raginisri are better to be in finals but how can that be when they are not even singing correctly although I don’t deny they each are unique in their own way. The actual way you should compare all of these people is not among themselves but with the best talents in India. We although run shows for profit, we do want to get to be recognised as the top TV channel. But if we compare most of the singers of this show with real talents like Roopa,23 who won the Amrita TV adult version, Parvathy,14 the junior winner, Devika,10 the Kairali , they are no where near. These girls whom I have just mentioned can sing any language from Tamil to English to Hindi to Malayalam and Super singer 2008 best girl Renu is not even suppose to be compared. It is 2009 and there are millions of people in India who can sing and thousands of them trying to become singers. But that is not possible right? So the best survives. And you cant compare this generation with the previous ones like SP Bala and Janakima or Chitrama or Sujatha. Those days competition is not like these days. Tamilians especially are bound to have their own favourites and be partial and the director of the show uses this superbly well. From the record we hold since the beginning of the show, as a playback singer, the best and ready for now from this show is Ajesh followed by Ravi but we kept Renu because it’s a new voice. Renu has a better chance than Ravi as Ravi overdoes the song and is a better carnatic singer. Ajesh is still young and his voice is just taking a turn although he has been recording before as a child artist for music directors like Illaiyaraja, Vidyasagar and others. Even now he has been called just that the show doesn’t allow him to do anything till the winner is declared. And for the rest of the people who might read this, next week wildcard winner will be announced with some surprises. The vote doesn’t really matter. And then we have some special episodes before the finals run till the end. May the best win (and surely will as there isn’t many brilliant ones left in final 4 to playback)

  8. Anon,

You bring up an interesting topic of how the comparisons need to be made. I have made comments only based on what has been shown on this program. It does not matter what else happened behind the scene (at least for me).

It is interesting you mentioned Roopa Revathi from the Amritha TV. The standards Roopa has set for a TV program can not be easily scaled by anyone else. She was an exceptional singer. I used to wonder how the Super Singer judges (Unnikrishnan and Unnimenon etc.), who have seen the like of Roopa, are even able to tolerate some of the lower standard they see in the program. This is reflection of the selection process of Airtel Super Singer. The program's format and production quality has definitely impressed people. They should also strive to raise the standard of the singing. Afterall they are claiming to make a contribution to the film industry at the end of the program.
